Introduction

The RMPA in conjunction with the RMP Museum are looking to conduct a data gathering project to collect information from our veteran and serving community about their operational service with the Royal Military Police. Although the Museum archive holds a large volume of documents, photographs and artifacts, there are gaps in relation to more recent conflicts and there is a risk that a lot of the information held by us will be lost with the passage of time.

We often underestimate the historical significance of our own experiences and amongst our veteran community, we will no doubt collectively hold a lot of information that may be useful for the Museum collection. We feel that it is therefore important that we attempt to collect what we can to preserve first-hand accounts of our Corps history, and provide future generations with authentic, first-hand accounts that official records often omit. Toby Brayley who is the Collection Officer from the Museum recently stated “we very much at risk of losing Corps history from the 60s-90s!”

Initial Campaign Areas of Focus

  • Malaya : 1948 – 1960
  • Cyprus : 1955 – 1959
  • Northern Ireland : 1969 – 1998
  • Falklands : 1982
  • Operation Granby – Gulf War 1 : 1991
  • Operation Grapple – IFOR/SFOR>KFOR/EUFOR : 1992 – 1995
  • Operation Telic : 2003 – 2011
  • Operation Herrick : 2002 – 2014
  • Any other Obscure Deployments

So what are we after? Operational photographs, maps, documents, general memorabilia, or other potentially historical material.

You can donate or loan the original material or submit digital scans, which will be added to the Museum’s digital archive. Photographs ideally should be annotated indicating the normal who, what, where and when. We will establish an online depository, which will allow individuals to upload digital material. Original material can be forwarded directly to the Museum.

The second phase of the project will be to obtain oral history from participants in order to capture stories and their personal perspective with additional background information on the various roles we carried out over the years. This is a valuable piece of work, as further ahead people may not know what the function did or the value it had.
