John ‘Tanky’ Walker

Tanky dedicated his life to service, first serving with the Royal Military Police for 15 years followed by a distinguished career in the Northern Ireland Prison Service during the most challenging years of the Troubles. Known for his professionalism and courage, he served with distinction in high-risk environments, earning respect from colleagues across both military and civilian roles.

RMPA Northern Ireland Branch

The RMPA originally did not have a branch in Northern Ireland and in 1981, recognising the need to support fellow veterans during a time of significant danger, Tanky took on the task of building the Northern Ireland branch. Despite the personal risk, he created a safe, supportive network for all serving personnel, veterans and their families that endures to this day.

For over 40 years, he served as the branch Chair, providing unwavering, gold-standard leadership and organising social, welfare and bereavement support to ensure no member was forgotten. He also developed strong bonds of friendship with the Irish Defence Force Military Police and helped build lasting cross-community relationships, strengthening ties beyond Northern Ireland. Tanky was supported throughout this period by his wife Eileen and their two children

The Soldiering On Awards, now rebranded as the Armed Forces Community Awards, celebrate exceptional achievements within the Armed Forces community, including serving personnel, veterans, reservists, families, and those who support them.

The 2026 Soldiering On Awards finalists have recently been announced, following the judging of nominations across 12 categories. Tanky was nominated for for an award for his service and it is the first to be accepted posthumously, surpassing several hundred submissions to make the final three for a Lifetime Achievement Award.  The outright winner will be announced at the Armed Forces Community Awards Gala Dinner at the Park Plaza Hotel, London, on Thursday, 17th September 2026.

Whether or not Tanky is lauded as the actual winner, the mere fact that his nomination was shortlisted as a finalist is both a wonderful recognition of his lifelong service to our Corps and a fitting tribute to his legacy in the Northern Ireland Branch of the RMPA.

Tanky’s widow Eileen and their children, will be attending the Gala Dinner fully funded by the CBF and RMPA. We have reserved a table at the event for the family and a number of invited guests that the family have requested to attend.
