Obituary For Phil Main

Philip joined the Royal Military in 1992 and later served in Northern Ireland as part of CONCO team.

On the 29th July 1994 he was on duty in Newry Co.Down, when the IRA carried out a triple mortar attack at Corry Square, Newry, targeting the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) station. The 9:00 AM attack in the busy town center injured over 40 people primarily civilians going to work.

Sgt Dave Stinton RMP and Phil were both injured during the attack with Stinton receiving shrapnel wounds and a broken leg. Sadly Phil sustained spinal injuries resulting in no movement from the neck down.

He was medically discharged from the Army and despite his injuries he continued to have a positive outlook on life and was cared for by his mother in Aberdeen, who survives him.

A courageous man who will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

    Had the honour of guiding Phil through training at Chichester early 90s, and then serving with him in 172, a true character and someone who would have excelled had he had the chance. I recall a few visits to see him in Glasgow's Southern General Hospital, never down or defeated but always upbeat and resilient. Shared a beer or 2, much laughter and banter flowed, the old Phil was still there. A true gent who will be missed by all, he inspired many and still does. My deepest condolences at this sad time. Looking forward to his celebration tomorrow and to raising a glass. Stu Reilly

    Corporal Phil Main was one of the very best Corporals who ever worked for me during my career in the RMP. He was one of those stand out individuals who you instantly recognised would be an RSM/Commissioned - and it was not just me that thought that. He was intelligent, fit and utterly professional in his duties and responsibilities, both as a soldier and police officer. Every time he briefed me when I visited Newry he was faultless in both content and delivery and could immediately answer any question that I posed to him, as he was the master of his brief as my local counter terrorism adviser supporting the local Infantry Battalion. He had a spark and zest for life that could not be contained and genuinely had wisdom beyond his years. He was also a very decent human being, who was great company to be in and with a moral compass that never waivered. He and his family are very much in my thoughts......
